The original magic balm (or witches flying ointment) was a way that witches used to anoint themselves with ingredients that were said to produce a trance like state, and shift the witches state of consciousness, and gave them visions or sensations of flying in the sky, visiting remote locations, and communicating with other entities in the spirit world.
